Coalbrook Mine Disaster Monument

Located in Clydesdale, the Holy Country Heritage Site stands as a powerful and emotional tribute to the miners who lost their lives in the historic Coalbrook Mine Disaster. Once home to the Coalbrook Mine, this site now serves as a place of remembrance, honouring those who were tragically trapped underground in 1960. 

Transformed into a heritage monument, Holy Country is a space for reflection, education, and respect. Visitors can experience the history of one of South Africa’s most significant mining tragedies while paying tribute to the resilience and sacrifices of mineworkers who shaped the region’s industrial legacy.

Etienne Rousseau Theatre – A Cultural Gem in Sasolburg

For lovers of arts, culture, and live performance, the Etienne Rousseau Theatre offers one of the most enriching experiences in the Metsimaholo region. Located in the heart of Sasolburg, this iconic venue has long been a centre for creativity, entertainment, and cultural expression. 

Originally built in the 1970s and donated to the community by Sasol, the theatre was designed as a multi-purpose performance space, capable of hosting a wide range of productions—from drama, ballet, and opera to music concerts and school performances. 

With a seating capacity of around 450 and excellent acoustics, the venue has welcomed both local and international artists, including world-renowned performers over the years. The theatre’s professional stage, orchestra pit, and modern lighting and sound systems make it a premier destination for high-quality productions.

Khoi Rock Art – Ancient Heritage (Deneysville)

Hidden within the landscapes surrounding Deneysville, the Khoi rock art sites offer a rare and fascinating glimpse into the lives of some of Southern Africa’s earliest inhabitants. These ancient drawings, believed to have been created by Khoi and early indigenous communities, serve as a visual record of history, culture, and survival dating back hundreds—if not thousands—of years.

Makgolokwe a Mafehleng​ – Cultural Heritage Site (Deneysville)

Penny Heyns Olympic Swimming Pool – A Legacy of Excellence

For sports enthusiasts and aquatic lovers, the Penny Heyns Swimming Pool offers one of the most iconic sporting experiences in the Metsimaholo region. Located in Sasolburg, this world-class facility is a hub for competitive swimming, community events, and national championships. 

Named after South Africa’s legendary Olympic swimmer Penny Heyns, the pool stands as a tribute to excellence and achievement in the sport. Heyns made history by becoming the only woman to win both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events at the 1996 Olympic Games, placing South African swimming firmly on the global stage.

The facility has a rich legacy, with the Sasolburg Swimming Club—established in the late 1960s—producing swimmers of exceptional standard, including national representatives and future champions. The pool also serves as the long-time host of the annual Sasol National Winter Swimming Championships, attracting hundreds of athletes from across the country each year.

Harry Gwala Multi-Purpose Centre – A Hub of Community and Opportunity
